Program Description

 

The Associate in Science Degree Nursing Program is designed to prepare the individual student for a career as a professional nurse. The program’s mission is to prepare competent, compassionate, and culturally sensitive entry-level nursing graduates whose professional practice encompasses legal and ethical decision-making in the promotion of health in the community.

 
 
 

Who qualify to the Bridge/transitional option Associate Degree Programs?

 

 

The Bridge/transitional option Nursing Associate degree program in the Azure College School of Nursing is specifically designed to serve individuals with significant background and/or experience in clinically oriented health care disciplines. For that reason, admission to the Associate Degree Nursing Program is open only to individuals in the following categories noted below.

  • Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses
  • Paramedics
  • Certain classifications of Military Corpsmen
  • Respiratory Therapist
  • Foreign graduate Physicians
  • Physician's Assistant trained and/or licensed in the United States
Students who have successfully completed at least 50% of the clinical nursing credit hours with a minimum grade of C in an associate, baccalaureate, or RN diploma nursing program within 5 years of completing their last nursing course.

How long does it take to complete the program?
Students attending full time can complete all general education and nursing curriculum requirements in 45 weeks.

What is the Degree Requirements
The Associate in Science (AS) Bridge/transitional option in Nursing require successful completion of 69 quarter credits, including 21 in general education and 48 in nursing.

Can I transfer courses from other colleges or universities?
Prerequisite and general education courses with a grade of "C" or better are transferable provided the course is consistent with one of our offerings. The Nursing Department Director must approve transfer of credits from another nursing program.

Where do students get clinical experience?
Clinical experience is received in hospitals on acute medical-surgical, obstetrical, pediatric and critical care units, emergency rooms and operating rooms; in extended care and rehabilitation facilities; with home health and community health agencies; and in psychiatric facilities.

Is the nursing program at Azure College is accredited?
The Nursing Program is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing. The student who has met all educational and institutional requirements for an Associate in Science Degree in Nursing from Azure College is eligible to have his/her name submitted to the Florida Board of Nursing to be considered as a candidate for the National Council Licensure Examination for the Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN). The Florida Board of Nursing is the state agency authorized to determine if the applicant qualifies to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) for licensure as a Registered Nurse in Florida. For licensure requirements, refer to sections 464.008 and 464.009, Florida Statutes (F. S.), Rules 64B9-3.002 and 3.008, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.)

Is there an entrance exam?
There is no Nursing Entrance Exam for:

  1. Student with recent (5 years or less) current and active license as Practical Nurse.
  2. Students with a LPN license and at lease an Associate degree in another field
  3. Foreign Educated Medical Doctors

All others will be required to pass TEAS-V entrance exam

APPLICATION PROCESS
The Azure College encourages students to apply if they feel they have the determination and ability to become professional nurses.  Azure College seeks dedicated students who desire to nursing care in a global community. Azure College seeks to provide the opportunity for a quality nursing education to a broad spectrum of students who might otherwise be unable to pursue a career in nursing.  In keeping with the College’s mission, Azure College views students holistically and respectfully, taking into account the uniqueness of each student’s relevant experience and training.

The Bridge/transitional option Associate Degree Program at Azure Collegeis open to qualified applicants of all races, religions and ethnic background.  Each applicant’s ability to succeed is carefully considered within the overall admissions process. The Azure College Admissions Committee gives serious consideration to all candidates demonstrating the potential to meet the rigorous academic requirements of a highly structured curriculum.

STEP I:  Application

The application must be fully completed during the personal interview.

STEP II:   Application Fee

Applicants must submit a $150.00 Non Refundable application fee.  This may be done via cash, credit card or by check.

 

STEP III:   Letters of Recommendation

Two letters of recommendation should be submitted as part of the application process.  The letters should address the applicant’s academic/work history as an indicator of the applicant’s high probably of success.

STEP IV:

Official Transcripts Applicants should request official transcripts from all universities or colleges previously attended. Unofficial transcripts provided by the applicant will be accepted only for the purposes of an initial evaluation.  No application is considered to be complete until official transcripts have been sent directly from the applicant's previously attended universities or colleges. Transcripts from non U.S schools must be translated and evaluated by an approved NACES agency.

STEP V: Once Accepted, the following must be submitted to the Nursing Department on the campus where the student registers and will be attending nursing courses. The due dates for the forms/certificates will be given in the mandatory, general pre-admission meeting that will be discussed in the acceptance letter provided to students:

  1. Submitted Criminal Background Check, clearance and Drug Screening that is clear and without a criminal or discipline history.
  2. Completion of a Medical History and Physical Examination. Admission into the Nursing Program is provisionally based upon of the approved Medical History and Physical Examination. This documentation must be submitted no later than the specified campus due date.
  3. Completion of the following certificates: BLS-Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers 3-8 Contact Hours, the CPR curriculum must be approved by the American Heart Association. Domestic Violence 2.0 Contact Hours; HIV/AIDS 4.0 Contact Hours; OSHA/TB/Hepatitis 6.0 Contact Hours; Prevention of Medical Errors 2.0 Contact Hours. All Certificates can be completed at Azure College, within a maximum of 3 months into the programs.

Note:

  1. Non-Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) applicants must successfully complete Azure College’s Nursing Skills Update Course with a grade of “S”.
  2. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) who have been out of practice for five or more years must successfully complete Azure College’s Nursing Skills Update Course with a grade of “B” or higher before applying.
  3. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) who graduated within the past five (5) years, hold a CURRENT Florida LPN license and have been actively working as LPNs, do not need to take the Nursing Skills Update Course, must provide proof of employment.

Required Disclosure

Individuals who are considering entering the nursing profession with a criminal history may experience a potential barrier to licensure following successful completion of an approved nursing program. The Florida Board of Nursing makes decisions on licensure on an individual basis. All individuals with a criminal or discipline history should read Chapter 464, Florida Statutes (F.S.), Section 456.0635, F.S. and Chapter 64B9, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.) as they pertain to the practice of nursing. The Board of Nursing encourages all individuals seeking licensure to fully understand these requirements.
